It is one of the most beautiful National Trust venues we have been to. Everything here ticks all the boxes. The views from the castle out over the Bristol channel are stunning, especially when you encounter a steam train chuffing along in the distance, so atmospheric. The history within the castle is engrossing, and the walk to and around the water mill is relaxing. We went on a beautiful sunny day, which added to the whole experience, but you will not be disappointed even on a less sunny day.

It was really fun exploring the castle and reading about the history of it.

We explored around the grounds of the castle and then went to the water mill where we tried some spelt flour cake. It was delicious.

Overall a great day, it was busy, but that was expected as it was a Sunday. Still recommend going regardless as the grounds are very vast.

Perched up high in the Lap of the Gods, Dunster Castle looks out over land and sea.
Set in vast grounds, the gardens & woodland walks are a must. There are many steep paths, but also slightly gentler routes.
The Watermill area, with gardens & river walk are beautiful, secluded & not to be missed. There's also a lovely Tea room by the mill.
The Castle itself is well maintained & the inside has lots of lovely rooms to wander around, with plenty of info to hand.
There is also another Tea room by the castle, plus a bookshop & gift shop near the exit.
We did see a few dogs, so accepted in certain areas.

Dunster Castle is a magnificent historic site perched above the charming medieval village of Dunster in Somerset. With its stunning views, rich history, and beautifully maintained grounds, it offers something for everyone, from history buffs to casual day trippers.

The castle itself is steeped in over 1,000 years of history, with impressive interiors that reflect its transformation from a Norman stronghold to a lavish country home. The rooms are tastefully preserved, with informative displays and friendly National Trust staff on hand to answer questions. The library, drawing room, and grand staircase are particularly impressive.

The gardens are a real highlight, lush, exotic, and well kept, with winding paths leading to peaceful spots and panoramic views over Exmoor and the Bristol Channel. The subtropical plants are an unexpected delight, giving the grounds a unique character.

A short, scenic walk from the castle brings you to the working Dunster Watermill, which is just as fascinating. You can see the machinery in action, learn about traditional milling techniques, and even buy freshly ground flour, a perfect souvenir.

Lovely place, we visited using a free day out token in the paper whilst on holiday. Lots of walking involved but some beautiful gardens and waterways. Would 100% visit again when next in the area. Can pay for parking and just walk the exterior gardens if you wished too which would be lovely in itself

A bit pricey, but you can definitely see where all the money goes. I can't imagine the amount of upkeep work it takes to maintain this place.
We visited on a beautiful day, so we were able to take advantage of the garden and grounds. The home itself is quite nice, and I love that it was actually lived in by the family.
We had lunch in town and walked around there as well.
If you're in the area, it's a great place to spend the day.

Lovely day out. Staff all super friendly and helpful. Wasn’t that busy considering it was a bank holiday weekend which was a bonus as we had a baby in a backpack. Everywhere really clearly signposted so if you go into the village you can make your way back into the castle and grounds / over to the Watermill really easily.
