Been a loyal customer to Merrie England for decades - so much so I tell people not from Huddersfield of it’s legendary hot beef and also back sandwiches.

After it got new ownership the quality has just declined. After a couple of really poor experiences I put it down to bad luck and when out for a stroll this morning went into New St and fancied a bacon and egg as a treat.

This is the final straw. Bacon leather hard and cold (not well done, just cooked and reheated several times, a snotty egg which was already cold so god knows how they did that and stale bread. Add to that it’s so cold in here I have to keep my scarf on. £9.15 for the privilege.

Should have gone to Greggs and paid half the price and got a sandwich I could actually eat.

Seems to be a theme looking at the reviews for this and other branches. Maybe they are struggling (as so many small businesses are) but if your food quality goes, it’s gonna be game over.

Sadly, won’t be back unless it’s for coffee only.

Visited after a previous good experience on their sandwiches. Visited today for a coffee and ended up getting breakfast as I saw it advertised.

It's very pricey for what you receive, meaning the quality of the food. It wasn't at all worth it to say you sit in. You'd expect it to be cooked fresh, not just the egg and the toast.

Other than that, the prices in question over £8 for 1 of each item on a plate and £3.50 for large but not large Cappuccino is appalling, but what really got me is the uplift on the kids crisps and 2 biscuits in a pack £1.75 each.

Come to £31 for a full English, a bacon and sausage sw, 2 coffees and crisps and biscuit and nearly £3 for a new addition Sausage Roll which was totally not worth the pastry on it.

An upsetting reveal to say this was a regular place to grab a sandwich. Seems they the prices need to rise to account for the empty seats inside.

Been a customer for over 50 years and an ex manager and this is the worst sanwich i have ever bought. Paid £4.05 for a cheese special takeaway from Merrie Englad New St. supposed to have 2 ounce of cheese in a slice and all I have is cheese crumbs. Asked for branston pickle which should be spread across the sandwich no just placed to one side. It tastes abserloutley disgusting. Doubt i will be supporting Merrie England's anymore sorry you have lost a very loyal customer

A wonderful West Yorkshire institution with a delightful throwback factor.

The branding and aesthetics of the stores are nostalgic and comforting. A little bit medieval, a little bit classic tea room, it does not need to change! Service with a smile and proper wait staff give it that old-school feel without it being stuffy.

Our sandwiches were LOADED with beef, our scones were scrumptious. It's a retro flavour and that is exactly what you want from such a place.

I don't want them to change anything here but if I had to criticise something it would be the spray cream. That could be switched out for the real whipped or clotted stuff

Since the change in ownership, who at the time said they wouldn't change anything as it was a good formula, Quality has dropped dramatically.

Merrie England has never been the cheapest of places, but until recently you knew you were going to get a good sandwich. But they have let standards fall so far, no doubt trying to save money.

It's a real shame to see, the people who work there are lovely and it's not their fault. More someone in an office who probably don't have the first clue other than how the balance sheets look.

I used to frequent a few (maybe all) of the Merrie Englands' across Huddersfield, Brighouse and Halifax. But in future I'll think twice and maybe go somewhere else. I'd sooner support a local firm than say Costa or Cafe Nero, but at least I know in those I'm going to get a decent product

I ordered a cheese special with a drink. I was brought a cheese toastie after about a 10mins wait, which I returned. After another 5mins wait this time I was giving the same toastie with pickle in it. This time the cheese was dripping out of the bread as it's been heated twice.
By the way for your information a cheese special sandwich is usually in a T Cake, not in 2 slices of bread..

Lovely visit for a sandwich to go usually have granary bread but the lovely lady Amanda tells me they have changed it to a whole meal bloomer she tells me it is absolutely lovely bread so I go with her recommendation and she was right beautiful bread and fabulous beef salad sandwich as usual.
We had a nice discussion regarding the delicious looking sausage rolls which is a new line and are sourced from a butcher, will certainly be trying them in my next visit.
Staff are friendly and always nice to talk with. My favourite sandwich shop.

I always order beef and pickled onion on a bread cake, and again this did not disappoint. The staff were and always have been very friendly and I enjoy dining here. My husband tried the new bloomer bread and he really enjoyed it.
