I ordered a great gift, small bottles of alcohol in a box, as a present, on Saturday 14 November 2020 via the company's website (MicroBarBox). That's what this company does, alcohol as gifts. The company specified "Standard delivery: 3-5 days". It didn't say "working days" so it could be arriving on Tuesday right up to late Friday or even the following Monday, 10 days away.

MicroBarBox sent me a pretty, witty email on Sunday 15 November 2020 @10.47am telling me everything (except the most important point: when it was arriving, and how). You couldn't see anywhere on the website if it was to be delivered by Royal Mail or a courier (I searched). For a birthday present, arriving late is a disaster.

Royal Mail, while sometimes infuriating, is useful because, if you miss the first delivery, you can collect the parcel from the depot anytime over a whole day/s, so it's easy to fit in to a busy day. With couriers it's the opposite, if you miss a delivery, you have to get hold of them, try and get another date, and wait in again.

Since the present could arrive as early as Tuesday, I emailed the Help section of the company on Monday 16 November 2020 at 6.37pm to ask (how is it being delivered?). It took a while for them to answer. On Tuesday Nov 17, 2020, 13:27, they finally confirmed: it was coming by courier, Hermes, and here was the tracking number….

That info took me directly to the Hermes website, (you have to input your postcode, even with the tracking number).

I discovered that Hermes never text or email you, you have to check again and again on the Hermes website. It seems a small thing but it turned out to be very important. Since you don't know when the website will be updated, you have to check, and re-check, again and again.

At midnight on Tuesday 17 November 2020, Hermes's website still didn't show which day it would arrive. We are all busy, checking a website a few times is fine, the fifteenth time you start getting annoyed.

On Wednesday 18 November 2020, early in the morning, on checking again (it doesn't save your postcode) the website said it would be delivered that day, but not when.

I waited in all morning. On checking again later in the morning Hermes' website said delivery was "between 12pm to 4pm that day". Having waited in all morning, I now needed to wait in for the whole afternoon.

At 2pm, by chance, I in-put my postcode to check again, and the Hermes website now told me the parcel had been delivered at 12.28, but the "delivery photo" they provided, was blank. No-one had buzzed. I dashed downstairs because a box of alcohol, just lying around, was looking to be stolen.

Luckily, the parcel was downstairs, inside the building, on a shelf, and still untouched, but I could have waited until 4pm, before even thinking to check the website again.

I haven't even opened the parcel yet, but I can tell you already, however good the present is, I will never order anything from this company again.
