Obi's Brixton Market Tour is absolutely worth it! The tour begins with a fascinating walk through the market, with lots of interesting explanations and delicious samples. We tried various exotic fruits, Jamaican soup, Nigerian pastries, spicy rice, and much more. During the tour, Obi told us a lot about the history of the neighborhood, along with his equally exciting family story. His father emigrated to England from Nigeria, his mother from Jamaica. Obi himself was born in Brixton, grew up here, and experienced the changes of the past decades firsthand. The combination of history and food was simply fantastic; I haven't experienced anything like it on any other tour. Following the tour, we enjoyed a full meal at a Jamaican restaurant, where our group of five shared various dishes, allowing us to try a wide variety of dishes. Overall, highly recommended!

This was hands down the best tour I’ve ever been on. Obi was our guide, and he made the entire three hours in Brixton unforgettable. It was my first time visiting, and from the moment the tour started, I felt like I was with friends I’d known for ages.

The food was incredible—every stop was delicious—but what really stood out was how much I learned. Obi grew up in Brixton, and his knowledge of its history, especially the Black history that shaped the area, is unmatched. He’s an amazing storyteller who brings the culture and history to life in a way that’s fun, engaging, and never dull.

If you’re visiting London and want a cultural experience rooted in community, history, and amazing food, I can’t recommend this Afro-Caribbean food tour enough. 10/10 would do it again!

Obi’s African and Caribbean Food Tour in Brixton was phenomenal. It came highly recommended by friends and fellow travelers in both Aviance’s and my circles, so I made it a priority to support this small business. First and foremost, Obi is an excellent host and tour guide. He beautifully articulated the rich history of Brixton—past, present, and future—while weaving in personal stories from his own family’s experiences growing up there. Meeting the owners and supporting the small businesses throughout the market was an added bonus. The tastings along the way were delicious, and the tour concluded with a family-style meal at a Jamaican-Irish pub. The entire experience was truly chef’s kiss—10/10!

Obi’s tour effortlessly blended history with flavor, offering an amazing range of dishes. We sampled the best of the diaspora, starting with savory Jamaican patties and moving on to the bold, intense flavors of Nigerian jollof, which, I must admit, was a tad too spicy for my palate but was absolutely authentic. The variety kept coming, with sweet treats like light, fluffy puff puffs, perfectly fried plantain, comforting chicken soup, and even unexpected delights like rich butter cookies and moist carrot cake. The tour culminated in a wonderful shared meal featuring jerk chicken, rice and peas, cabbage salad, callaloo, fried chicken, oxtails, and rum punch!

However, the tour was also a vital reminder of the challenges facing the community. As we moved from the traditional Brixton Market toward the more visibly transformed Brixton Village, the signs of gentrification were present everywhere. Obi handled this with humor, grace, and insight, acknowledging the menace it poses to the long-established cultural identity of our vital neighborhoods.

It was an educational and delicious afternoon that honored the resilience and spirit of the community. I especially appreciated the thoughtful, personalized thank you note we received at the end—a small touch that showed Obi’s true dedication. I wish his tour business, and all the shops we visited, every success in the future.

Obi’s tour of the Brixton area was amazing. I’ve been to London several times but never to Brixton. Obi’s extremely knowledgeable of the area (he grew up there) and has first-hand experience of the people, culture and history of the area, vendors and people who’ve made an impact. Of all the touring we did on this first trip to London, the one we find ourselves talking about the most is Obi’s African and Caribbean Food Tour. Mainly because of what we learned and experienced that was much more than any other excursion.

Obi’s tour began with his personal history of growing up in Brixton in combination with the political and pop history of the time, which provided a vivid, tangible context. While guiding us through the vibrant mural alleys and art-filled bizarre, he introduced us to unique, one of a kind boutiques that left us feeling privileged to bear witness of their existence. We made it a point to return after the tour to further explore and bring home items that could only have come from there.

Of course this was a food tour, but calling it that is an understatement, it was an experience. Obi produced fresh dishes which were the most flavorful and lingering of anywhere we ate on our trip. For each generously portioned sampling, Obi told of its cultural background and the reasoning for the ingredients used in them.

It’s a mistake we never thought much about food tours. Obi’s tour proved it is the easiest, most interesting, and informative way to learn about a culture. Obi was personable, accommodating, and inclusive to the varied participants in his intimately sized group. This tour is a must for any foodie and/or cultural inquirer.
