This chippy took me back to my childhood when my gran and grandad owned the fish shop at Oakenshaw, County Durham. Old fashioned range that I think is log fired, my grandads was coal.
The chips were amazing the fish very good. The batter was probably way better fresh out of the pan and eaten immediately. When I got home the batter was no longer crisp and had to put it in my deep fat fryer for a while. Just the same that was not the fault of the shop and the taste transported me back in time to my grans chippy.
While the food was really good the price was a bit on the expensive side. I usually pay about 10 pounds, these were 13 pounds.
All in all they were worth my detour on my way home after being told how good they were. If you are in the area I would highly recommend trying them.
The ambience of this place alone is worth the visit. Outside of somewhere like Beamish there can't be to many place's left like it.

Always wanted to visit here but live a little too far away. I was passing through and they were open - why not? Cod and chips. The fish was a large, well cooked piece, which was meaty with a very good portion of chips. It would serve two. I will certainly call again if in the area. Cash only!

Absolute rubbish. Got home with cod and chips and couldn't peel the batter from the paper as it hadn't been fried properly and was only partially cooked therefore sticking to the paper instead of the cod. Wrapped in only two small sheets of newspaper and wrapped in a can't be bovered sort of way I almost lost the entire lot at my door step. And all of this for £13 !!! Do people go on about this place just because its old fashioned? Never again. Felt completely ripped off.

Seen this chip shop on Facebook today and had to try it. Absolutely unreal!!!!! Beautiful thick cod and wonderful chips. Best Fish and Chips I’ve had in a long long time!!!!! All the staff were friendly and kind and I even got so see the coal fryer. Thank you!!!!

Heard about this chip shop, so was over in Northumberland and thought I'd try it out for fish and chips .
Definitely would recommend 10/10 it's been the tastiest fish and chips I've had in years .would highly recommend if your over in Northumberland and staff are lovely and friendly and nothing a problem to them .

Hallelujah a fish and chip shop that knows how to cook chips the fish was fantastic too will definitely be back I'd rather travel to get decent food than suffer the rubbish served locally

Having seen wonderful reviews we thought we would give this fish shop a visit this evening. We live a fair distance away so decided to call into Durham for coffee etc, drive to Esh Winning, find somewhere to walk the dog then get to fields fish shop for opening at 16.30. We waited for 10 minutes, looking at website saying open. No lights were on. Local folk were calling by to find the shop closed.. No sign on door or website to advise closed.... Very poor communication... Very much doubt we will call back

How have I never heard of this place before, I've lived in this area my whole life, just recently found it through a Facebook Post so decided to drive there from consett to try it out, well worth the 15 minute drive, fish cooked to order which was a lovely chunk and perfectly battered, chips were perfect and the black pudding was awesome, 100% worth the £9.50 I payed which I think is a cracking price compared to other chippy's in the area, I'll definitely be going back again 💯👍
