Came in for dinner for a date night out and thought we’d try somewhere new.
We went on a Sunday, and were looking forward to the roast dinner options as we’d had a quick scan of the menu beforehand.
Once we arrived, it became evident that they were very short staffed and run off their feet, but I want to make it clear this DID NOT affect our experience - the staff were so friendly and apologetic, and lovely to talk to. They were working so hard to give everyone a great experience and so we didn’t mind waiting a little longer for things.
In terms of the food, we enjoyed the starters very much, but unfortunately were a little let down by the mains. I had the trio roast, which was not piping hot and fresh tasting. The potatoes were FROZEN, not homemade, as was the stuffing. Considering we were being charged £17.25 for this, I absolutely would’ve expected everything to be made in house.
That being said, the slow-cooked beef on the bone was delicious and very enjoyable.
All in all we had a good experience, and would return to give the restaurant another go on hopefully a less busy day and on the normal menu, however we WON’T be coming back on a Sunday until the frozen elements of the dish is replaced, because we feel that’s bare minimum expectations when dining out.

The staff and food are amazing. Megan helped with making my stepdads birthday special. The man behind the bar was lovely too. Atmosphere is friendly and pleasant.
Couldn't of asked for more. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning. Thank you to you all.

Had a lovely time Monday evening, place was quiet and atmosphere was nice. We were served by Haighleigh who was a total delight and very attentive. Could not rate her service higher, she did an amazing job. 🙂

I cannot fault the Boars Head.
I had not visited in years…..and so I was wonderfully surprised to see how well maintained and true to high standard I had remembered.

Ollie and Kirstie were working and greeted me naturally (no mass chain pub rehearsed lines, or forced welcome)
Genuinely warm reception and service.
It’s rare these days to achieve that connection, respectfully given, with genuine warmth.
The food was brilliant. (Mushroom and ale pie, with vegetables).
A fantastic classic menu in the most beautiful of settings.

This pub and food venue is a triumph.
Most importantly - the welcome, continued warm service and conversation were exemplary.

Great atmosphere, we sat outside to enjoy the sun, lake and the sweet ducks.
It was disappointing to understand that they wouldn't heat up my baby's food and the hot water is not that hot either to heat the food, so I had to sit there with a winging baby and try to enjoy my food, which was quite nice.
My partner and I had the pork belly, which was absolutely gorgeous, delicious, and we truly enjoyed it... but too greesy and salty for a baby.
I recommend this place to single adults or bottle fed babies. Nice place all in all.

Took advantage of the AllTrails offer to go for a walk somewhere new and enjoy a free breakfast. We were warmly greated by Rob who wasn't fazed by our somewhat dishevelled appearance and muddy dog! The breakfast was great and they even provided a sausage for the pooch! We'll definitely be back to enjoy more of the Boars Head's great hospitality and food - and explore more walks through Thorndon Country Park.

It was our first visit to the Boars Head today. The food was lovely. The service was great. Would definitely recommend and will be visiting again. We had a mushroom starter, pork belly and steak pie for mains and a salted caramel sundae for dessert - all were good portions sizes and very tasty.

Lovely Essex pub, I come here a few times a year with family to celebrate special occasions.

The food is always top notch, as well as the team that serves us.

Big thanks to Amy, who served us this Easter Sunday, very polite and professional. A real credit to you.
