We attended the two day Helmsman Course (IWHC), there were 3 of us on the course. We had a fantastic time, a steep learning curve made completely understandable due to the exceptional quality of the course content delivery. Our instructor Liz was just brilliant, she balanced the essential safety requirements and course content with our varied ability’s and learning needs. We had so much fun and have walked away full of confidence and amazing information.

completed inland helmsman’s course on 23and24th sept 2023 . Having personally just bought my first narrow boat and having no previous experience on them . My insurance company would not insure me with out 10 hrs experience or having the RYA inland helmsman course. I’m so happy I picked Richard and his team (instructor Ian) from the first phone call with Richard and booking in with Michelle everything was super . The knowledge that Ian gave to use was second to none with some laughs along the way . I’m now really confident to get on my boat and navigate her solo if needed through the canal system . I can’t wait . Undoubtedly well worth doing the course with Richard And his team . Thank you guys .

This is a very good training centre. I wanted to learn about driving a narrow boat and I have found it fantastic. This is my second visit and has been worth every penny of the cost.
Richard goes well beyond the basics, he trains for safety and uses his higher knowledge to give you a far greater depth in the subject.

I recently underwent training for my two day Inland Waterways Helmsman’s Certificate. I’m a complete novice to this area, and Richard’s friendly and affable style soon put me at ease. All areas of controlling a narrow boat were covered including use of the tiller, pre journey checks, knots and ropes, equipment checks, safety drills, simple manoeuvres, canal etiquette, use of the locks etc. It was really enjoyable and Richard really passed over his knowledge. I heartily recommend Birmingham and Midland Marine to anyone who wishes to do their IWHC.
