Very strange Scottish person behind the till, quite unsettled by encounter with him during which he began by asking my partner where she was ‘from’ clearly trying to steer the conversation towards her Chinese roots. Once she confirmed she was of Chinese ‘heritage’ (she is from Vancouver but this was not what he was getting at!) he told deranged stories about his travels in Asia where he has been to a hundred cities in china as well Korea, as well as owning 6 properties in Philippines. He apparently has friends all over Asia and when he visited he would only stays in 5 star hotels as they are ‘cheap’ at only £55 a night. And he is a good technician who has got food poisoning 3 times so only eats at hotels and none of that street food stuff.

He would then go on to tell us how Asian people only ate fish as they can’t afford red meat. Then asked my partner if she liked fish at which point she said to me we had to leave. I told him we had to go and began to back out towards the door only for him to shout at us about Beijing. Felt lucky to get out of there alive and with limbs intact.

Not sure what this person’s official diagnosis would be, delusions of grandeur-Asian subtype?! (“I’m extremely well traveled” he said). Felt clear as conversation went on that we had been trapped to be kept as sick little pets to his ego play as a person of expansive knowledge of east Asia. To which all you wanted to do was hold out your hands and back away slowly, even as he continues to talk about korean friends who most likely do not exist and how much Asian people simply cannot afford to eat red meat.

A recent refit means this village store now has a lot more on offer than it used to have. Pricey, like all small convenience stores. Also has a post office
