Fishermans Return - Great Yarmouth

I've been coming to the Fishermans Return for decades and have always enjoyed supporting what used to feel like a genuine local pub. I recently visited with my parents and parked as I always have — only to receive a £60 parking charge two weeks later.

At no point were we informed about any new parking system. The staff made no attempt to mention it, and nothing was clearly signed or pointed out. A simple, courteous reminder would have avoided the whole situation.

When I contacted the pub, I was met with complete indifference. No apology, no willingness to help — just a dismissive attitude. Frankly, it felt like they couldn't care less.

It’s hard not to see this as a cynical money-making scheme at the expense of loyal customers. Between the average food and the lack of basic customer care, this visit was deeply disappointing. A once-loved pub that’s clearly lost its way.

We returned to the pub after last visiting a year ago and were so disappointed with the food. Two of us had beef pie that came with a small amount of potatoes and basically a tablespoon of peas. There was no gravy so we had to ask for some and having to order more chips. We don’t like big portions but for the money it wasn’t worth it. The Lasage tasted very floury with a bit of limp salad on the plate. Nothing tasted like good old fashion home cooking. The food used to be lovely but it certainly has gone downhill. Such a shame as the pub itself is lovely and is local to us. We won’t be going back for food

Been here before because of location and friendly atmosphere, however things have changed. For the price for my meal was over priced, because the boozey pie was disappointing years ago it was bigger and looked handmade. Now it looks like it's been brought in frozen same as vegetables so very disappointing.

Have regularly visit the fisherman’s return as we live local and it has in the past been great food. We visited on 3rd May 2025 and dispointed with the quality of the food, I had fish pie which was very watery and husband had fish and chips ( both in our opinion ) was very expensive, wanted the shepherds pie but At £21.00 was not going to pau steak p4ices……
Unfortunately we won’t be returning .
Just to add the servers were very fast and pleasant.

Original pub full of character and charm massively extended through necessity.Our evening meals were wonderful and the staff excellent. However if you are staying the night check if the chirping heater outside the bedroms has been fixed.I wasn't able to sleep atall and a good nights sleep was much missed! I mentioned it the next morning and hope it gets sorted as wouldn't stay again if not.

Just dropped in for coffee after a walk. Great location and a lovely old pub, but the worst coffee I have been served in 20 years. I say served, you are given a token to use the machine. It was awful, made worse by the price of £3.30.
Pretty shocking price, especially for something so dreadful. Handed in back to the staff as it was undrinkable. Staff didn't really care.
Drove elsewhere for food and a decent drink. Giving it 2 rather than 1 star as it has good decor.

What an excellent local pub. Whether you’re local or a tourist this a great pub. Very traditional. Had three local hand pumps and a decent local IPA craft beer too. Solid pub food, great quality kids food and lovely bar maid. Lots of traditional features like open fire place, characterful decor, good toilets and even old style beer towels on the bar. Something you don’t see that often. Also a decent range of non alcoholic beer if that’s the kind of thing that floats your boat.

We came as a family for lunch. The service was friendly and quick. The food was delicious and good portion sizes. Especially the puddings! We all left full and enjoyed a walk around the beautiful village of Winterton.
