However, another reviewer pointed out that the marina may not be as visually appealing on grey days with the tide out, as the mud can be quite evident.

Probably very pretty on a sunny day when the tide is in but decidedly dull on a grey day with the tide out and only mud showing. Interesting orientation boards describe the history of the village and its harbour.

Lovely place to visit, if lucky when the tide, so you have a nice view not just the muddy areas. There is lovely view and places to go for a walk. Further up there is a stoney beach that is nice to walk. People are very friendly and not much noise going on. Add this to a sunny weather and you can have a wonderful day out. There are also a few pubs close together if wanted a nice place to eat. I would recommend.

The marina is in need of some TLC and updating. The marina gates have been out of commission for quite some time, apparently, so it dries out with the tides, which puts a lot of pressure on mooring lines. The silt has built up so high in areas that boats with a large draft have been unable to enter during neap tide.

There are currently no hot showers since Aug 2023 due to a boiler issue, and the laundry only takes old pound coins, but these can be obtained from the marina office.

This review is an honest one, rather than a negative, as it did not detract from our enjoyment during our stay. Apart from the chandlery and fuel, all other amenities are available, and the staff are helpful and friendly. Visitors should call in advance to ensure entry.

Locals told me that the harbour didn't have the marina initially and that the river would wash the silt out to sea. But developers didn't listen, re-directed the river, and built the marina. However, as it cost so much to constantly dredge, the silt finally won; the gates couldn't work, and it fell into disrepair.

The town then suffered when business was taken elsewhere, which is an absolute shame as Watchet is gorgeous. Maybe a river re-direct, and a lock could sort this mess out.

I'll do a separate review for Watchet town as I have loads of info.

Lovely harbour and town.
We had heard about the port when we visited Coleridge's Cottage a few miles away, where we heard how it helped inspire his famous poem "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" so we just had to come and see the port for ourselves.
The town and harbour is a little delight, and still has it's charm. It's not a big place, but we enjoyed a lunch on the harbour side and soaked up the atmosphere for a couple of hours. Well worth a visit.
