The worst fish and chips we've ever had.

My wife and I have spent the last 18 months travelling around the UK and Ireland and have had quite a few visits to chippy's but nothing ever compared to our memories of the quality of Compo's.

We're back in the area for a flying visit and thought we'd spoil ourselves.

Well what a mistake that was.

Burnt offerings is what we got - chewy chips, fish that you can't bite through and the most disgusting onion rings we've ever seen, let alone eaten which is why we couldn't even stomach them.

I honestly don't know what has happened, we only moved away from Holmfirth 4 years ago and this is not what we remember.

If I have to give a positive, the teacakes were nice!

This place has gone right down hill. absolutely discussing and the staff are just on another wild completely. There taking the money not even lissening 2 what u wont and the place needs a hygiene rating assessment as the rood is gray over priced and was stud there watching the girls behide the counter and thy don't have hair nets or hats 2 stop there hair fouling in 2 the food and seen one girl scratch her head and then pushed her hand over her nose and then picup the food utensils and start sorting the food out for ppl in the restaurant glad I changed my mind. I WILL NOT BE COMING BACK AT ALL AND I SUGGEST 2 EVERYONE THINKING ABOUY GOING DONT EVEN WAST YOUR TIME.

We have visited Compo’s (both “take away” and restaurant), for years now and have always thoroughly enjoyed the excellent food served here. However we visited today and have to say that we were extremely disappointed. I really and absolutely hate to complain in every way, but on this occasion today’s meal was pretty poor to say the least, and as such feel that we had to highlight our issue. First of all the serving staff were so very pleasant, professional, and friendly in every way and a real credit to Compo’s. Alas, the food was not good at all. Firstly, the plates were cold and therefore not conducive with serving food which is deep fried in what is essentially a “hard fat”. To this end the chips, (on my wife’s “small fish and chip” order), were cold. I ordered the Jumbo Cod (without chips) which was indeed piping hot when it arrived but was so greasy, the fat residue was solidifying on the cold plate around the food, Due to this, I cut most of the batter away and left it be.The fish content was almost “wafer” thin in content, (for supposedly a “Jumbo” portion) , compared to the fish portion in my wife’s meal.
I feel certain that this is a “ one off” and I will certainly return to Compo’s due to the very positive past experiences. However I hope that my comments and review will be noted, and that this is and will be an isolated experience. My sincere apologias to you for the negative review, though we feel sure that these issues will be satisfactorily addressed going forwards.
My apologies once more that I had to negatively review, and we wish you every continued success for the future. To reiterate, and as per our review, Your serving staff were excellent and I thoroughly commend them all.

Very polite waitress. The food was great, not greasy at all. The meal was worth the price and also a nice table by the window with a stunning view.

In Holmfirth for business decided we would have lunch so called into The Pickled Pheasant told they “Don’t take Walk Ins “. It was 1.15 pm We were shocked as it was not busy and plenty of empty tables .
So we drove around the village, I remembered I had seen a fish & chip shop on entering the village we popped in. My husband got a lovely warm welcome on entering, ordered fish & chips & sausage & chips extremely clean shop beautifully presented and my fish Well ! The best fish I’ve had in years absolutely delicious. Thank you so much for the lovely lunch Compos and thanks to
The Pickled Pheasant for not taking “ Walk Ins”.

What a lovely find Highly Recommend Compo;s this fabulous shop.

Have eaten here many times over the years, food has always been good, service slow because it was always busy. Visited just before Christmas on Monday 23rd, there were three or four tables with about 12-15 people, could see four people working there. Waited ages for food, when it arrived it was cold. Don’t mind waiting, because we expected that it was being cooked and would be red hot. Order was wrong also, when we complained the server said they were very busy, which was nonsense because the place was empty. Fair enough they apologised and took away the food, by this time we had been there an hour and was hungry. Food returned and the fish was hot, but the chips were cold again, and not fresh, was that hungry we just eat it. Also not bread and butter. Fish was nice to be fair. Overall a really disappointing experience, will not be returning.

Great place for fish and chips. Craving satisfied, lost our way finding this place just to have fish and chips 🍟 portion was big, but one get promo was good, however it would be more excellent if there’s a bit of leafy 🥬 salads 🥗 👍 highly recommend place. Any staff who attended us was lovely and approachable. She’s very helpful choosing our orders.
